I worked at Honeywell full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Some good, clever engineers to be found there. Good people in general.
Have implemented DO-178B processes better than many companies I have been to.
Stays current with modern technology.
Engages in ambitious and interesting projects.

Cons

Opinions: Too much work is outsourced.
Concept of getting 24 hours of operation with off-shore outsourcing does not work effectively.
Domestic cohesiveness, the oneness and pride in ones work have suffered from outsourcing.

Many schedules are simply unrealistic and doomed to run late and over-budget.

Fear of a layoff has become an implicit driver to overwork the engineers.

Observations: Domestic engineers have become mostly facilitators and auditors.
Direct engineers are over-worked. There are frequent layoffs, particularly with contractors.
Cost-cutting methods are sometimes baffling. Someone once said Honeywell will spend $100 just to save $5!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop transferring the knowledge base and control of work offshore.
Nearly all the "hard" engineering work seems to be done offshore

Examine your cost-cutting methods. Are they costly cosmetics, self-defeating or beneficial and realistic?

Construct sensible schedules. Realize that only so much can humanly be done in 8 hours a day. Extended hours look good in reports but they give diminishing and buggy returns.

To get a feel of what's really going on, spend some hours unannounced and informally with the engineers in the labs.Talk to support people e.g. computer admins and lab techies, but those not under your administration so they don't feel intimidated.
Not all work-related information is expressed in status meetings or morning stand-up huddles.

    Pros

    You won't have a lot of left over salary to make frivilous purchases like an new car, nicer home, cool vacations, etc.
    You can pretty much work the hours you want. Your manager is too busy trying to score his/her next move to watch you. This is because most people who advance at Honeywell never stay longer than 3 years in one place. Keep moving so you never have to live with the decisions you made. Anyone who stays in their current role longer than 5 years is a loser.

    Cons

    Worst health care premiums and employee benefits in the Fortune 500. How about $7400/year for medical insurance on a family of four? And that's with a $3000 deductible. You're into your own pocket for $10,000 before the company spends one penny on you or your families health needs..
    My business has lost over 30% of the salaried employees in the last 3 years. These were 20+ year employees. Every one of them went to a company with better benefits and pay. In most cases it takes 2-3 quarters to get approval to hire their replacements.
    Dave Cote has said "we will not be replacing employees in USA and Western Europe". So this is a dead end opportunityfor most North American and European careers.
    If you are looking for a job and you are a USA/European technical person - look somewhere else. Honeywell Sr. Management believes in the engineering prowess of such technical "hotspots" as Tianjin,CH, Bangalore, IN and Tijuana, MX ! That's where they are investing for the future. Not the USA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    It's simply pathetic that the "CEO of the Year" has now used the excuse of "uncertainty" for the 4th year in a row, to explain away no pay raises (except he got one), no investment in growing the business, increased health care premiums, lower than average match on 401K, below market salary and all the other dissappointments that go along with working at Honeywell. The economy is always uncertain! You can't use it as an excuse every year. Why does the board let him get away with this BS every year? And this year, he added "governement uncertainty" to the excuse list. What's next - the "future" is "uncertain"?

    Pros

    Great people with a lot of talent.

    Cons

    Employees work very hard but seldom recognized for their efforts. Work life balance does not exist in most areas. Too much emphasis on short term gains rather than long term solutions. Career advancement opportunities only exist in certain regions (Phoenix / New Jersey).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your workers. Need to get away from short term metrics that will hurt in the long run. Need to work on employee benefits...no longer in line with similar companies. You're losing great talent.
