I worked at Horace Mann

Pros

Great people
Target market
most actually care about our target market
Good pay
Company trips are great if you attain them
Immediate supervisor

Cons

Products, Products, Products- there are not enough of them to compete
Weak life product line, to say the least
Pricing on Property & Casualty isn't good enough to make up income lost on products
Poor agent training due to limited training resources
Health insurance is insanely expensive

Advice to ManagementAdvice

INVEST in the things that matter to the comnpany long term: training is such a weakness. Further, invest in a system that can sell current products, instead of just term & whole life.

Very good company to work for, probably one of the best entry level jobs in Springfield

I have been working at Horace Mann

    Pros

Beginning pay is great for entry level
Yearly raises (not big ones but better than nothing)
Generous vacation/personal/sick/holiday days (10 paid holidays off!) (1 week vaca after 6 months, 2 more weeks at your year, then 3 weeks a year after that. 10 sick days and 2 personal days per year)
    Great camaraderie with coworkers
This company actually cares about their employees.
    Yearly performance bonus.
Shift differential pay for later shifts.

    Cons

Miscommunication is apparent. Some of the "consultants" that the reps have to call give different information on the same subject depending who you are talking to
Managers are very very busy. You may have to ask a couple times before something is resolved.
Some of the agents are extremely lazy and will not do their own work, they call and expect you to do it for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please train our agents better!!! if they had a common grasp of some of the things that we do it would make the job easier.

I have been working at Horace Mann

    Pros

Good enhanced commissions first years. Can get a book of business if available. Good management - good people. Sales goal not inforced. Low cost operation. Ok brand recognition in school system. Improving technology. Company actually listens to agent comcerns and adjusts.
The start bonus is good money. Even if you sorry - you'll make $50k to $60k the 1st year.

    Cons

DO NOT start scratch - get a book PERIOD. Agents only average 5-10 P&C units per month and LESS than $5000 in life per year - seriously!!! Just not enough money to run an office. NO brand recognition outside of school system. Dont think people will buy Horace Mann that's NOT a teacher - they won't. Limited products. Weak life products. You have to sell $500,000 to $1,000,000 in flex annuities per year to make money with Horace Mann - PERIOD. HM is not a P&C company!
You are a Financial Services Rep (with very limited products) that can write some auto policies. Valic is killing HM. HM is a good company for life producers that's tired of driving all over america. But the commissions are 55% (low). If you are a P&C producer - Don't DO IT. TOO SLOW. You will chase teachers for weeks just to close 1 auto policy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that you dont have a strong enough brand for P&C. Don't lie to new hires. You will be a Financial Services Rep - that can write auto! Allow agents that have a strong desire to sell P&C to get appointed with non-competing P&C carriers
