Pros

The only pro is that the company provides a good work life balance, but I suspect its more for its self image than anything else.

Cons

There are many cons, and warning. The first and foremost is that you are reliving high school agian. IF you are not part of the cool crowd no matter how hard you work, go above and beyond expectations, mind your own business and not make waves, you will have a hard time moving up. THere are exceptions but they are few and far between. Your career path is expedited when you are a well endowed woman, "play the game", or connected in some way to hiring managers. If managment knows that you are basically stuck at Horizon, and if they want, they can stagnate your growth out of sheer perverse pleasure because they know you are not going anywhere. Education is not truley valued - and only in rare occasions. Jobs requiring degrees above high school are easily filled by those who are not qualified either becuase the applicant has the inside track from a manager , they are the teachers pet or they are friends. Many jobs are filled by unqualified people who have to go back and asked the seasoned employees questions about the job they are supposed to perform. Jobs are created for people or a promotion is offered as a last resort when an employee finds another job and managment doesn't want to lose them. I am always surprised when a member has to speak to a supervisor and that supervisor is speaking the them in ebonics. Ebonics laden emails are always a pleasure too. The managment staff or as they like to be called the "Leadership" staff are far from it. They will take advantage of you when and if they can when they know you are stuck there. They don't have the courage of thier convictions to stand up and do the right thing even when they make the error. They get perverse pleasure in keeping people down and moving along those who they like. The only thing you may learn from them is to not trust anyone, and to always cover your back with a paper trail. HR is a joke - what is supposed to be confidential is not. You have to be very careful when dealing with them since it may get back to your supervisors. And while HR says that certain hiring practice don't occur they lie. Jobs are still created for people, or people are told to post for a position by manangment as an indication that the job is theirs. People are put into jobs that they are not qualified for, and HR turns a blind eye to requested qualifications.

Advice to Management

Stand up and be the leaders that you pretend to be. If something is fishy then something is wrong. Just because someoen is a "Good Guy" doesn't mean a thing. They act that way to you because of your position. You should have the corage of your convictions and stop the hypocrisy. Nothing has changed, the old boy network is still in effect and subordinates don't tell the truth because they are afraid of saying no. With that mentality another Enron Scandal will eventually occur
