No opinion of CEO

Pros

Stable company Conservative financials with virtually no debt Good customer relationships Strong execution mentality Familiar brands Good people overall Good responsibility record

Cons

HR has hamstrung the organization and lacks the talent to position the company for a changing business environment Senior leadership team is a mixed bag of accidental appointments. Many would not have the qualifications to apply for their job in a peer company. Talks about innovation but does not deliver. Company says it respects the individual, then promotes bullies. Underperforming employees are allowed to stay in positions for years or are repeatedly transferred to other departments with the same results.

Advice to Management

Walk the walk. Even those of us with shorter tenure see the inconsistency between words and action. Leadership seems to have consensus for everything, which means nothing move forward. Seniority with the company just means people carry favorites and grudges with them for years. What worked in the past is not going to work in the future. Fear that the "glory days" for the company will be in the rear view mirror with this senior level executive leadership.

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Competitive Salary, good benefits, many opportunities for advancement, excellent sales training, promote from within

    Cons

They do not always promote the best person for the job. Hormel is very focused on promoting women and minorities into management currently, which I believe is much needed as upper management is almost all white males, however, the best person for the job should be promoted and that hasn't always been the case in recent years. Also, Hormel tends to keep around employees, even if it is clear to everyone that the employee is not meeting the minimum job requirements, which can be very frustrating to management and co-workers who are impacted by the inadequate employees.

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

-Very stable and steady company -Like to promote from within. Most senior managers have been with the company many years. -Small company feel with lots of exposure to senior management.

    Cons

-Ultra conservative. Do not like to take risks. -Operates more like a manufacturing company than a consumer packaged goods company. -Headquartered in a small town. Difficult to get top talent to move to headquarters, so the best people leave. -Almost all decisions are made based solely on the cost instead of the return. -Very few people within the company have worked anywhere but Hormel which results in the "we've always done it this way" mentality.

    Advice to Management

Do whatever it takes to hire some big players from outside the company to bring in some fresh ideas. This company has so much potential. Engage more employees in strategic planning and let them be creative. Take some calculated risks and start thinking like a CPG company instead of a manufacturing company.
