I have been working at Hospira full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Decent corp culture, HR has been bringing in outside talent at mid and upper levels of management.

Cons

Many came from Abbott and have 25+ yrs at company and refuse to change with the times.

    I have been working at Hospira full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Good engineering talent and some managers who want to do the right thing. Good location, reasonable facilities. Salary is competitive. Good flexibility in working hours. Ability to work from home. Helpful co-workers. Opportunities for the right people to step up in responsibility without a lot of tenure.

    Cons

    Priorities shift continually, which wastes lots of effort, time, and money. Employees work here for years without feeling the pride of shipping a software product.

    Fiefdoms are a problem at all management levels. Too many divisive managers. Culture of divisiveness and cancellation keeps employees wondering if site will be shut down or division will be sold off.

    Deductibles mean company health care costs a family $1000s.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continually outsourcing core capabilities means Hospira will continually be in a fire drill.

    Mid-to-upper level management should spend an hour a week with a low-level lead or non-management employee. Listen to employees who say a schedule is unreasonable (by a year).

    Unifying leadership is needed. "Beatings will continue until morale improves" is not the right kind of strong management. You have good people who want to do a good job; lead them.
