I worked at Hospira full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Higher than average pay to counter poor reputation as an employer
Great if you aspire to work in India in a few years or need a higher paying job until you find a good company to work for.

Cons

- Very top heavy organization in corporate with lots of politics and finger pointing. Management does NOT have your back, as most work load and blame trickles down from VP, to more VPs, to Directors, to Managers, and finally to the few remaining staff level employees or temps to solve the problem.
 - Finger pointing culture motivates lower levels to not communicate real problems for fear of punishment
 - Short-term focus for immediate financial gain versus what's right for the longer-term.
 - Business is now almost paralyzed by overly conservative quality and regulatory processes because of past sins from lack of investment and succession planning.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you focus on patient outcomes and service the money will come, focusing on money first will destroy the company over time. Patient-centricity will attract talent motivated to perform for more than just money. Focusing on money primarly will attract talent primarly interested in money. Reward employees who do the right thing in supporting service levels, and remove those who game the system for bonuses. Flatten the management structure and hire more doers. Keep leaders willing to get hands dirty and hold themselves accountable. Pay attention to turnover and reasons for that.

Good luck!

    I worked at Hospira

    Pros

Great people to work with. One of the only companies that could really say they are part of the solution to the healthcare crisis

    Cons

Middle upper leadership - VP Levels - are stuck in the way things used to be and can't seem to find a way to change out dated processes and thought patterns. They seem to be holding on just as long as they can so they can retire with a golden parachute. As long as the good ol' boys are in control nothing will change, there will be no room for growth and creativity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your people stay because they believe in Hospira and what this organization means to patient care. Recognize that and stop following the salary and benefits trends down so that we need to look elsewhere. offer flexible paths to career advancement, TRUST your people becasue your customers trust them.
