I have been working at Hostelling International

Pros

Hostelling International provides a good learning environment, supportive managers, casual work environment, minimal overtime. It's good for an entry level position where you want to gain more experience.

Cons

The company is not so well organized and there was quite a bit of turn over. The wages are also quite low as compared to similar jobs on the market.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should continue to provide many learning opportunities for staff so that it is a worthwhile place to stay employed although the wages are low.

    Pros

    - you might be able to get some free trips with travel agency partners if the management does not stop you,
    - some colleagues are very nice and friendly.

    Cons

    - the senior management in Iceland is very unprofessional,
    - no training whatsoever,
    - there are many young interns (mainly from the Netherlands) who work for almost no money for three months at a time on average; the two hostels in Reykjavik are run more or less by those people without providing any training to them before,
    - if you are a paid employee, you might be given less work or quietly dismissed without much notice,
    - employee contracts are not accordingly updated,
    - the hostels are not a safe place to work,
    - the organisation is very bad and you will often have to do other people's work or deal with unsatisfied customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - to start thinking of their staff as of real people,
    - to organise their work better and reduce staff turnover,
    - to make fair contracts and offer fair pay.
