I worked at Hot Topic full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Freedom to express yourself, employees are expected and encouraged to be passionate about music, fashion, and pop culture, lots of creative freedom, clear communication all throughout the company, employees are encouraged to share ideas and feedback with buyers and analysts.

Cons

With the company constantly trying to figure out who the core customer is and what they want, changes are sudden and sometimes drastic. Last minute promo changes and other workload additions happen all the time. There are always a million things to do and payroll is barely there. In smaller volume stores, most weekdays have one or two person coverage. Backrooms are tiny and so is the sales floor so putting out new product is like Tetris.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Giving store teams time to plan ahead for workload changes would make a world of difference.

I worked at Hot Topic full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

+ Benefits for full time are good.
+ Meet awesome people (customer and employee alike).
+ Most open dress code I've come across in a job.
+ Listen to good music all day (completely subjective opinion, of course).

    Cons

    - High pressure to sell both in store AND on an in-store online kiosk ("HT Connect"). While this is true for nearly all retail stores, you are expected to be a high pressure salesperson and meet set goals daily with no commission.
    - Low pay, small raises. It seems they would rather pour money into more YOLO/LMFAO stuff and experimental lingerie stores than give a better pay to one of the major things that keeps the company alive; the store employees.
    - High pressure from upper management who have no idea what it is like to work in a store environment and thus don't understand why, for example, you can't complete shipment, mark downs, and signage changes in a two hour period.
    - Favoritism.
    - Management typically do not follow the "5 Basic Management Skills"/tend to make up their own rules.
    - Company seems it would rather fire employees that have worked for the company for years and replace them with newer employees.
    - Company would rather hire from the outside than promote completely capable employees from within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. The company does not care about how their employees feel anymore.
