I have been working at HotChalk full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Hotchalk has above average pay and great benefits, including stock options, with many different benefit plans that fit different life situations. The company is focused on serving the education industry with ethics and integrity. Some of the operational issues in the past have been resolved and the company is focused on hiring quality employees and helping them grow within the company. Management issues have been resolved and a team has been put in place to help Hotchalk grow into a leading education services company. Hotchalk does expect its employees to work, but it rewards hard work with a professional and fun work environment. Management does a great job of keeping employees informed on the company's progress and always encourages input from employees. .

Cons

It is a start up company so not everything is always a smooth process. This is the nature of any start up company. As the company grows it is becoming more and more stable and new roll-outs have become more smooth, but it is not perfect.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep on growing with quality employees. Maintaining an employee focused culture makes Hotchalk different from the competition and makes employees want to come to work every day. It really is the small things (flexible hours, trust, lunches, company outings, etc...) that builds the culture everyone wants to succeed in. Also, keep with the additional training model that is being rolled-out from the training team. Keep promoting from within!!

    Pros

The benefits were standard at Hotchalk. The salary was a little above average. The atmosphere was war and fun. I believe in earnest that the company cares.

    Cons

There was no training and no help if you were struggling. Constantly asked how they can help you although the they did nothing to help. ADOA's were too busy with busy work and not willing to develop their specialists. It is expected that you work 6 days a week, and don't expect to take a vacation, management frowns upon it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to succeed, develop your enrollment specialists, and don't be so quick to make your company a revolving door of employees.

HotChalk - Horrible mismanaged company - A start up that won't make it

    I worked at HotChalk

    Pros

Ok benefits, ok pay, other than that, not much went well.

    Cons

Management had no idea what they were doing. Instead of learning about the business they were trying to break into, they hired a number of people, used their knowledge and then found flimsy excuses to fire them. They changed their business model almost weekly with no prior notice. Systems and SOP were put into place, and then employee feedback was completely discounted when proven not to work. Senior management had no idea how to run the business or how to treat employees with respect. Lied about future compensation, promotions and found weak excuses to let people go without any kind of performance evaluation. Little to no communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of blaming employees for lack of understanding, realize it's lack of support and training that results in failure. Take responsibility for your own incompetence and treat your employees as though they are valuable to the company instead of drones that can be replaced at any given time.
