If you're qualified they'll restructure, lay you off, and then hire someone less qualified.

Pros

Actually enjoyed my time at HMH. Good people, good brands, some good products, plenty of potential.

Cons

They have no idea whether the people they already have are good at their jobs or not. Decisions seem to be made in a vacuum by people completely detached from the work that's actually being done. They then place an enormous amount of stock on "pedigree", regarding experience at companies like Microsoft as the cure for all ills. But the reality is that they are not building "schools of the future" and the business they're doing now is the business they were doing 5 years ago - selling to schools and school districts that are low on budget, high on class sizes, interested in technology adoption but unwilling or unable to implement drastic change to do it. Replacing highly qualified, experienced people with Microsoft resumes and their own "people" doesn't change that. The constant concern about job security, completely independent of job performance, is a distraction that does nothing positive for productivity.

Advice to Management

Look at what you've already got and stop being so naive in thinking that a press release-worthy new hire is going to do anything other make current employees worry about their own job security.

    Pros

Flexible hours and fairly casual environment, at least in my department. Excellent office location in downtown Boston.

    Cons

Very top heavy. Limited access to upper management. Very strong feeling of "just being a number". Chain of command is very very long and it takes a long time for anything productive to be done.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your employees and growing their loyalty to the company. They are your greatest asset and you're risking losing them.

    Pros

GREAT work life balance, if you are looking for a strict 9-5 this is the place. Additionally, the salary is great (for the orlando office) but may be low for Massachusettes residence.

    Cons

Very Top Heavy, titles are inflated. One may have a Director or VP title but responsibilities can merely be a manager or Sr. manager at another company.

    Advice to Management

Allow the Corporate office to perform as a Corporate office. The "shared service center" in Orlando runs the show.
