I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as a contractor

Pros

Very casual environment, we all wear jeans and the manager is really personable. I like coming to work.

Cons

The company meets its financial goals by cutting and laying off it's employees despite needing to hire people.

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Local management and coworkers. A paycheck. Benefits. Fond memories of pre-Zecher days.

    Cons

Upper management either doesn't have a clue, or could give a crap about the employees on the line and communicating with the customer. Inventory levels suck, morale sucks, hope for a bright future sucks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue. Think a little more about your employees and customer service and a lot less about how you look to the world. Oh, and that Microsoft "bring 'em in, burn 'em out, kick 'em out" attitude has to go.

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

The hourly rate is good... Lots of opportunity to work overtime... Paid holidays

    Cons

Overtime becomes "mandatory" and the hours get long... No time off...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the Summer Temps better, most of us enjoy the job, but it would be nice to feel appreciated by more than just our customers. The turnover would probably be a lot lower if it didn't feel as though we were being strung along with the promise of a possible permanent position at the end of the contract.

    No opinion of CEO
