Constant re-organization as legacy publishing fails to find a future

Director (Current Employee)
Austin, TX

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat people, passionate about making great products that can really have a positive impact on teachers and students.

ConsStruggling to redefine its offerings in a shrinking marketplace, leading to a revolving door of new executives who reorganize structures without any defined path to achieve their lofty goals.

Advice to Senior ManagementRip the band-aid off. Stop the slow death spiral of legacy publishing and slash and burn the company down to a smaller educational media producer.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Worst Internship of my Life

Marketing Intern (Former Employee)
Geneva, IL

I worked at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as an intern for less than a year

Pros: The best thing about this internship was quitting and moving… Cons: They totally lied about the internship position and told me it was going to be a "marketing" internship. It was basically a telelmarketing internship. 40hrs… Advice to Senior Management: Don't treat interns like they're parolees. Lighten up a bit,… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company… More

Upper management needs improvement

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time for more than 10 years

Pros: Flexible schedule and ability to work from home occasionally; dedicated… Cons: Poor communication from upper level management. Decision makers have lost… Advice to Senior Management: Have more respect for you employees. Adjust your focus back… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend More
