Pros

If you are really into fashion you may be able to get enthusiastic for a while in here. the other sales staff are the only thing that keep you going in here.

Cons

Shifts are regularly allocated at the last minute, which is very detrimental to being able to develop a work life balance and plan ahead for anything. There are days when there is not nearly enough cover and other days when there is far too much purely due to the powers that be deciding that staff cover has to match the proportion of money that changes hands each day instead of being based on the jobs that need done. Hof does not let people work to their strengths, instead everyone is expected to be an all-rounder. Management give you very high targets for sales without taking into account how few tills there are or how much time you have had to spend to provide the world class service they expect, or the amount of time you have ended up in stock rooms looking for stock or the amount of time you have had to cover fitting rooms; however, if all of these things are also not done then you will be pulled up on it. You will be criticised for bad mystery shopper reports even though the result actually showed that it was the standard of the stock that was the issue. Hours are horrible and you always end up doing weekends and lates regardless of whether it suits - there is absolutely no flexibilty in this area. You are expected to sell the in store credit card even though you have expressed your own very good reasons as to why you do not think that it is ethical to push it, especially in this economic climate, and in addition to this you have pointed out that you have in fact had the card and you think that of all the store credit cards it is the worst. The response to this from management was well it's your job so tough. The only way to get any discount is to sign up to the house of fraser staff master card, this is not a perk.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you say you are going to listen to your staff, actually do so. They are the ones on the ground who know when certain numbers of staff are needed for certain tasks, they know how time needs to be divided and giving them some more creative scope may get them more enthusiastic about the product. Take advantage of the fact that often students etc may specifically want evening and weekend work, whereas those people who are doing this as a full time job or as a major chunk of their week (including people who have multiple jobs to make up their hours and/or their money) may need to do more of the work during the day. Shifts could easily be done to better suit the staff. Do not only base your staff appraisals on sales figures, build teams that allow individuals to work to their strengths so that within the team all bases are covered, some people are better at admin and organisation while some are better at selling. Very few people are true all-rounders.
