I have been working at Houston Methodist full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Centrally located, onsite lunch options including Starbucks, a few good people sprinkled throughout the organization.

Cons

There is no accountability for results or recognition for a job well done. Everything within the organization is political whether it makes good business sense or not. There is no real career ladder and some (not all) of management micro-manages times 1000.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create measurable metrics, acknowledge those who meet/exceeds expectations, allow the professionals you hired to evoke his/her expertise to take the organization into the current millennium. Technology and processes are too far behind. It means nothing to lead medicine if you are still using DOS based systems. Pay attention to the revolving door b/c it will continue and no one seems to care.

I have been working at Houston Methodist full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, decent salary, and good clinical professionals. Very good doctors. CEO of the system is a good person, good doctor, and strong leader. Good culture in most areas.

    Cons

Because so many of the senior leaders go from being administrative fellows to leadership, the management team at VP levels and above is sometimes not well trained or diverse and experienced. No strategic planning at all. There are some pockets of truly horrible places to work, like the international, wellness, and business development teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out the senior leadership based on employee retention and satisfaction scores. Recognize that you need some senior leaders that are better at leadership.
