I have been working at Howard Hughes Medical Institute full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Better pay, better benefits. HHMI employees get average 20% more than their university peers, plus, their medical benefits are very attractive.

Cons

More work pressure, greater expectations from PI. After all, it is still an academic institute, means your salary is not comparable to a similar industry job.

    Pros

This is a prestigious and fantastic institute. Anyone who is part of a Howard Hughes Medical. Institute laboratory should be very proud.

    Cons

It is very difficult to obtain a position as a HHMI investigator. Also, working in an HHMI lab can at times be stressful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please continue to maintain the high standards of this fantastic organization. People affiliated with HHMI labs are very proud and I want this tradition to continue.

I have been working at Howard Hughes Medical Institute

    Pros

There are many great things about being a postdoc for the the HHMI; for example:
    large research budget
    good health benefits
    transparent administration
    collaborative and supportive scientific environment

    Cons

One tough thing about being an HHMI postdoc is the expectation to produce top tier publications in a timely fashion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think it would be useful to have a mechanism for HHMI postdocs to give feedback about their PI's to the persons at HHMI HQ.
