Broken Model - Publicly Traded Consulting Firm

Associate (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Huron Consulting

ProsVery good level of work/life balance. Outside training sometimes difficult to get approved, but often open to motivated employees. Employees are given freedom to run and participate on almost all levels of engagements. High visibility available to junior level employees with c-suite level management clients.

ConsPoor review process with results not taken into consideration for promotions/raises. Feedback difficult to receive from management and rarely given. Model of tracking utilization and performance does not reward or give credit for business development or training of others. Thus, a lot of the engagement work recycles dated material. Fair amount of 'dead weight' on engagement teams with a few 'heavy lifters' while others just push papers around.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide a stronger incentive to develop talented junior level staff members and promote from within. Compensation must be increased in order to retain talented individuals. Analyst's start pretty high but quickly level off or drop below competitors after 2 years. In the last year it is astounding the amount of intellectual capital that has left Huron. Employees are leaving at an alarming rate after the SEC investigation. While it appears there is a lot that is being done to satisfy a few MDs and Directors there is not enough being done to keep talented individuals at all levels. This has placed a great burden on the remaining employees, especially when those doing a great deal of the work are leaving. Finally, stop promoting Managers and Directors with no sales ability. Client relationships must be developed better at the Manager/Director level so that promotions are warranted and individuals will have the ability to go sell new work and expand the practice.
