OK place to work if you have a good boss (and there are a few) - but there are too many bad bosses there.

Senior Professional - Individual Contributor (Former Employee)
Oceanside, CA

I worked at Hydranautics

Pros1. Excellent benefits - from Vacation time to health insurance choices to communter benefits, they offered things not always seen at other companies.
2. Great industry with incredible market growth potential and a life improving product that you can be proud to be associated with.
3. There are a some great people there, and a handful of decent managers.

Cons1. The culture encourages (even rewards) back-stabbing and kissing ass. Leaders all over the company fall for it hook, line and sinker. It was really an incredible thing to witness.
2. The company is penny-wise and pound foolish. I saw so much money get wasted cleaning up messes that could have been prevented with a small upfront investment.
3. They promote to the level of incompetence and do not train or fill in any skills gaps, especially for new managers. This is a set up for failure and results in a bad employee experience (for both the manager and their direct reports).

Advice to Senior Management1. Invest some serious money in leadership development (starting with the executive team). They mean well, but it takes more than technical skills to run a company. They don't know what they don't know.
2. Invest in an organizational development consutant to identify ways to change the culture. Right now, the people are too busy protecting themselves to think about what's best for the company.
