I have been working at IBM

Pros

Chance to work with world class technology.
Vacation holiday and personal time flexibility.
Health benefits seem to be pretty good.

Cons

Erosion of support functions, leads to extra work just to keep your work environment going. Workstation support is one, admin support is another.
Recurring layoffs keeps you on edge.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not sure what advice I could offer. Leadership at IBM is driven by shareholders, and apparently some large shareholders exert a lot of pressure on IBM execs with regard to earnings per share, share buybacks, dividends, acquisitions, "productivity" -- which is tied to human resource costs, etc.

Large corporation where politics often take precedence over business.

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

IBM has good benefits and the people in general are a pleasure to work with and very supportive. Within IBM there is a wide breadth of opportunity and IBM does promote networking with colleagues throughout the company.

    Cons

Politics and personal aspirations can affect decision making in the best interest of the smaller business units. It is expected that an executives will put their career first.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When there is a lack of clarity in business direction for the individual, this creates pressure and stress and a decline in moral. The direction in the US with global hiring has sent a message that US employees are expendable.

Exhausting, low paid, no room for advancement

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

Healthcare, 401K, good location, its a job and a good name for your resume.
Good education to take with you to your next job.

    Cons

Low paid, limited if any raises, no room for growth, too much work, too few people due to constant turn over. I have seen at least 100 people on my floor leave in the past year then you have to pick up their work even though you have no time. The if you can't fit it in you get a poor rating.
Managers are like robots, running around like crazy, always in a frenzy, no time for their people. Two or 3 years without a raise or bonus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management at the Dubuque site cannot fix these issues, its the model. It does not work. The customers don't like it, the employees don't like it. Management needs to listen if this center is to survive.
