I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The people are great - some of the best people in the industry in terms of work ethic, can-do attitude, helpfulness and competency. The work environment is pretty good -- cubes, decent equipment, comfortable, on-site cafeteria with decent food. Vacation: I've worked with IBM for 25 years and get 5 weeks paid vacation, plus sick leave.

    Cons

The corporate focus is to make money for the shareholders and executives. Employees are simply expendable resources, and are squeezed to do way too much with way too little. If you're not a top performer, your life can be miserable until you quit or are forced out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't think profits would drop that much if IBM were to get folks to work reasonable hours and simply hire on more help to cover. I do not think that running in "crisis" mode all the time gets the best out of your employees in the long run.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great overall financial performance and prospects for growth
Strong Brand and presence in marketplace
Wide range of technology solutions provides for interesting work

    Cons

High focus on driving down costs with constant threats of layoffs
Silos and metrics driven management style precludes effective innovation and cross organization collaboration
Large amount of administrative pain makes getting things done quickly difficult
Cross organization mobility is touted as a plus, but is diffiuclt in practice

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out how to invest effectively in people and in simplifying operations
