Former Employee – worked at IBM full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Employees with a passion for IT technology.
Processes and procedures for all aspects of the business keep operations running fairly smoothly.
Cons – Bully culture in executive ranks (at least in the US).
The company has been driving up the stock price by cutting expenses, especially salaries and benefits - hence the many rounds of cuts and early retirements which have decimated the ranks of experienced professionals in IBM. The brain drain has accelerated with the voluntary departure of top talent.
Extremely risk adverse management forcing a unhealthy and unsustainable reliance on innovation through acquisitions. (IBM Research still excels at invention, but their output typically must go outside of IBM to be nurtured to the innovation stage (by engineers and entrepreneurs) before being brought into the IBM product portfolio through company acquisition.
Advice to Senior Management – Dedicate 40% of product / solution funding to disruptive innovation (establish an internal VC fund with timelines not tied to the fiscal calendar and suitable investment criteria), remove the barriers between business units, and recognize the value of experienced professionals.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
