I have been working at IBM as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

    Freedom environment, international cooperation opportunity,

    Cons

401K matching become one time per year, rather than per pay check, bonus per year is very low even with highest PBC, salary increase speed is even slower than inflation 3%, no stock.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat your employee good is important to the success of the company in the long term of view. Bad 401K matching policy, slow salary increase speed will hurt the motivation and loyalty of the employee. Good finical report with high profit in short term based on the scarification of employee's benefit will hurt the company in the long term of view.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Big and consolidated company, you kinda feel "safe" working for IBM.

    Cons

Big and consolidated company, you constantly feel as an "expendable asset"... it doesn't matter how important you are, the company will make clear that you can be easily replaced.

Besides that, (at least in Brazil), "manager" is a figurative position with no importance where usually people lacking competence sits and care only for the other incompetent and brown nosers.

IBM has this "yearly formal evaluation process" called PBC (personal business commitment) where you are graded from 4 (worst, you are probably gonna be fired) to 1 (top performer) which is subjective as hell (basically your manager will grade you whatever he wants based on how much he/she likes you. The problem is this rating dictates your opportunities inside the company, as example: if you are not rated 2+, you are not eligible to salary raises, certain training or opportunities.

Basically if your manager doesn't like you, he stalls your life/career for a whole year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start recognizing those who can really make the difference to your department instead of those apple polishing and doing "extra work" while slacking on the core activity.
