I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Profitable company
Sets long term strategy that delivers profitable value
Strategy is usually dead on, very few mis-steps from business execution
Shedding low-value, low margin businesses, investing in high value, high profit segments

Cons

Big company - sometimes difficult to work thru various layers of mgmt. (But if you have the right mentor, an IBM'r can help you figure out the best path)
If you don't stay close to the customer's viewpoint, can become part of the bottleneck problem.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing a great job on strategy and direction, so IBM'rs can go execute and deliver results for our customers and shareholders.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM has excellent processes, solid management and excellent work-life balance for employees. IBM has good focus on employees development and offers great training opportunities for employees, if they choose to take them up. As always, career development is up to you, so more work you put in, better results you will get at IBM.

    Cons

Processes can mean slower response time sometimes, especially working across international boundaries. It's hard to avoid this for a large corporation, especially since each geography has its own operating company (due to legal and regulatory requirements).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the focus as you have on profit growth - continue to acquire high-margin / high- potential start-ups and IBM will continue to dominate the marketplace.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work at home with some travel
Opportunities to work with various companies in different industries
    Always challenging
    Always learning
    Decent salary

    Cons

Work groups are fragmented and finding qualified resources to do simple project work can sometimes be very challenging and frustrating
For employees at the professional technical level there are very few if any perks, rewards or recognition for doing outstanding work
Navigating thru the mass bureaucracies to get things done is at times overwhelming
Most technical professionals have very heavy work loads and work long hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In the area of Strategic Outsourcing need to develop more efficient delivery models
    Develop employee appreciation programs
