I worked at IBM

Pros

IBM offered excellent benefits compared to others in the industry, they also do well at providing more than adequate training

Cons

Management seems to be blind that you can't continue on an exponential reduction of resources and believe that you can continue to do the same or better with less resources

Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop cutting muscle and build back strength to the company

IBM is a good place to work if your personal life is more important to you than your salary and promotions.

    Pros

Flexible schedules and work from home opportunities are really good. Benefits are good. You used to be able to move around pretty easily to new jobs, but that has changed. Now each division limits taking people from other division. There are a lot of people who are very professional and work very hard. There are also a lot of really nice people who work at IBM.

    Cons

Company is more focused on cutting cost than making profit to affect the bottom line. Because of this raises and promotions are few and far between. Company is moving a lot of jobs overseas. IBM used to send people overseas for 2 years and then they could return to their job in the US. Now they require you to quit work in the US and go to work permanently in the other country. You loose all US benefits. They figure that people are desperate enough to do this so they can get US talent in places they are establishing to take US jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to get people selling things to sell at a profit instead of just cutting expenses to make a profit. It seems that the sales people will do anything to make a sale just to bring in revenue, including selling things at a loss. Because of all the cut backs in travel and expenses, the people who live and work in places not close to a plant are left out of the communication process. There is also a lack of education for these people. They need to spend more money bringing people together for meetings and meetings with upper level management.
