IBM provides a lot of flexibility to develop different types of software and at different layers of the stack.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Many really intelligent people work at IBM. High innovation and strong teamwork come naturally to anyone who focuses on their work and cares about the product(s) being developed. IBM is very serious about work/life balance.

Cons

IBM claims to "pay for performance" and they do. However, the differentiation on pay is not as strong as I would logically expect.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Over the last decade, I have observed two main areas where IBM could improve.
1. The process for identifying and addressing poor performers within teams seems slow. Perhaps it is bound by corporate process.
2. Try to limit the amount of team changes, management/executive changes, and project changes. Increased frequency of changes leads to lower morale.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

IBM offers tremendous growth opportunities for employees. One can have many "mini-careers" all while working for IBM -- examples: sales, management, HR, program management, etc.. They continually invest in their people and provide ongoing education. Better than average compensation, good benefits, etc.

    Cons

Unless you are opposed to working hard for a company who hold Business Conduct, Integrity and Customer Satisfaction to the highest standards, there really aren't any.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In this era or remote/virtual teams, try to ensure that employees all still feel a part of the strong IBM culture that was so important to IBMers in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You will find that IBM prides itself on education the workforce, networking within the workforce, training the workforce. I'm not certain if you can find a better orchestrated internal system for improving employee performance and training for carreer advancement.

    Cons

    1. The amount of time performing tasks/training outside the normal work day with the client. 2. The extra 4 hours in a work week (44) amounts to almost exactly the same amount of time as 5 weeks of vacation. You effectively work off your vacation.
