Pros

Opportunity to network with many consultants
Competetive Salary
Good Benefits

Cons

Poor bonus program
They recruit surplus amount of consultants when there is market is good and through you out ruthlessly when there is no need due to market conditions.

Advice to Management

Don't recruit too many consultants when you know that you are going to layoff them for sure at some point of time.

  1. IBM STG is good for computer engineers, hardware engineers and physicists but not good for computer science engineers.

    Pros

Place for discovering innovation. Plenty of opportunities to move within STG for good-fit. Many opportunities to learn new technologies and contribute to the same.

    Cons

STG's primary business model is to make and sell hardware products - high end servers/data storage/mid range server/storage. This makes it hard to change course midway.
STG is not a good fit for computer science professionals (e.g. BS or MS in CS).

    Advice to Management

Should either create opportunities and/or openings for those who are already in STG to (by finding a niche and supporting software based solutions) and are software professionals, OR, identify a pipeline to transition such people into Software Group. Because, STG as it is employs such professionals but does not offer appropriate career growth opportunities for them (long term).

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

    big company benefits
work with some hard working people
execs at top are very impressive but less so at director level

    Cons

a lot of dumb people work at IBM
no career movement unless you move back east
    pay raises small/ promotions limited

    Advice to Management

IBM says they are putting power back in hands of managers but it is not there. Ex: the non-existant 5K that was put aside for all mgrs. Try getting that money. It did not exist other than in an e-mail from the CEO. Finance teams and execs prevented use.
