I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Really smart co-workers, good people to work with.
Used to be a great place to work, grow and retire from.

    Cons

    No respect for the employees
Constant layoffs (under the radar most of the time by doing roving 'resource actions' across divisions)
Things are starting to hit the fan. Look at the latest numbers posted for this latest round of layoffs (June 2013) at allianceibm.org
They won't give you a 401K match unless you are an employee on the books in december - ie. you work all year, if they get rid of you before december, you lose the 401k match
They've gotten rid of so much talent that customers are suffering in a bad way and if you work there, you are subjected to firefighting at a scale unseen before.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should replaced. They have no morals. They talk about their roadmap to 2015 for the stock but everyone calls it roadkill 2015. At this rate, they are killing the company.

Non existant HR Policies and poor management makes life hell in more ways than one

I have been working at IBM full-time

    Pros

If you end up with a good manager, you can work from home at times, changing accounts and building a diverse skill set is a strong possibility.

    Cons

On an a average the work doesn't get very technical and slows learning.
Since HR policies are really weak, you dont have a foot to stand on when discussing issues with the management.
The work life balance isnt too great for most people. If you are a hard working you'll really have to shrug off the weight that will be placed on you and scrounge for any appreciation whatsoever.
Management makes lots of promises and comes up with odd, on the spur policies to keep from fulfilling those promises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get an hr policy in place and stick to it for one and all. not just your relatives and brown nosers. Please research if you are in a position to make the promises you are making before you make them.
