I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

IBM is supportive of innovation and is supportive of a good work life balance. It is easy to work the hours that fit your life and have access to the resources to create new innovations in IT.

Cons

The EPS promises made by IBM management to stockholders has caused them to achieve business performance results through some excessive resource cutting that can hinder long-term development activities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in additional organic development and reevaluate the importance of some product and business priorities to see if they continue to have the value to software consumers.

I worked at IBM as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

None? Leaving at 4:30 was nice, although this means that you have to eat lunch at your desk. In slow periods there is some downtime.

    Cons

Worked as an immigration case manager, contractor position through Manpower. It was absolutely awful. People are unprofessional, employees are treated like 5th graders. Morale is incredibly low. We would routinely get the most asinine emails about things like packing up our things before exactly 4:30pm. At one point they asked us to clock out for bathroom breaks, but people revolted. Managers are busybodies that walk around the cubes trying to make chit chat/look over your shoulder while you attempt to get work done. Work from home was promised during hiring, and then delayed indefinitely once you start (although contractors who already had a work from home day were allowed to continue working from home). Manpower management has NO CLUE what the actual job entails and yet tries to give input as to policy. Manpower HR is unresponsive to complaints about issues in the workplace. It was crappy to begin with, but things have really gone downhill lately. Everyone I knew working there was looking for a new job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start treating people like adults. Use positive reinforcement to motivate workers and recognize those who are performing well rather than micromanaging via email and pointless meetings.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

life/work time flexibility > good for working moms

    co-workers

    Cons

    >job security > no such thing anymore
    >The company I started and was proud of, no longer exists and that's truly sad!
    >opportunity growth > unless someone dies or is resourced action, younger folks don't have an opportunity get promoted.
    >no team cohesiveness >Tend to work on projects
    >Remote team> Not being part of the main stream product team and its location, tends to >make remote team feel insignificant in its drive and contributions to the whole product.
management > low level manager are stuck with carrying out marching orders from above instead of developing and cross training individuals

    > benefits are disappearing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share the wealth across the company and its workers.
Recognize that the younger employees will be the future of the company. Quick laying off seasoned workers. They are needed to pass the torch to younger ones!
