Former Employee - Account Executive in San Francisco, CA

I worked at IBM full-time (more than an year)

Pros

A wealth of resources at your fingertips. Lots of opportunity to grow within the company and get experience in multiple industries.

Cons

The systems and processes that have been prescribed for all 450,000 employees aren't always a good fit. Also, Lotus Notes.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more autonomy to individual business units, don't force everyone to use the same computers, software, or expense system. The "JAM" sessions seemed pretty worthless, or maybe we were not trained well enough to make use of them to where they are worthwhile to us on an individual level.

Former Employee - Senior Engineer in Burlington, VT

I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM has great technical projects, amazing engineers, programmers and scientists and the horsepower to make things happen.

    Cons

IBM has changed from the overly safe, job for lifetime, company before the 90's to a highly competitive employer constantly pruning the perceived bottom 10%. While teamwork is required to complete projects, rewards are focused on individuals. If you are highly skilled, competitive and seek the limelight, go for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the mass layoffs when the company is clearly not in jeopardy. It can be forgiven in the 90's when the company was spiraling out of control. Not now.

Current Employee - IT Leader in Somers, NY

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Global reach
    Sound management practices
    Access to world class resources
Company understands that it must restlessly reinvent itself
    Good Work / Life balance

    Cons

    Hard to move quickly
Globally integrated enterprises are important but the overall fabric of the company is fraying. Difficult remaining passionate about a company where many work from home and never see their employees / colleagues.
Size of company makes it difficult for short term restless reinvention.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase focus on corporate culture and the value of each individual employee...reduce focus on each employee as an expense that can be managed across the world.
