Former Employee - Marketing Manager
Former Employee - Marketing Manager

I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

IBM is a great place to work most of the time. Most "knowledge workers" work at home and stay busy going from one conference call to the next. You might have to work on a spreadsheet or .ppt from time to time, but marketing roles require very little real work. It can be mind-numbingly boring, but leaves plenty of time to pursue other things. Most of the real work is involves managing your way around the infrastructure of the company.

Cons

It is a totally executive centric organization, and most employees pledge their allegiance to their VP and then go to war with other groups. The capricious, megalomaniac executive, always grasping for power and control, is woven into the fabric of the culture, and exec worship is required for survival.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read Tom Watson Jr's memoir, beware the rock star exec and show some respect for the individually.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Despite attrition in recent years, still has very deep technical staff. One of the greatest assets the company has is its people. Its amazing the work that can be done if you know how to navigate the organization....once you master this skill, the sky is the limit.

    Cons

On the hardware side, its not clear what the vision is for the company. As software and services are the financial engines for the company, I think we've lost sight of how hardware fits into the equation. Also, when the chips are down, there are some really bright people that have come up with unbelievable tactical ideas that have helped us....lets leverage those people more on an everyday basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please let the internal team know the strategy with hardware.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

flexible work environment, good health benefits the ability to manage your workload and work schedule. You get to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry and you can always find someone willing to help you with anything.

    Cons

Pay increases are all but non existent even for top performs. Executive management has no long term vision. Business is managed in 90 day increments, and while IBM talks about client first, it's all about Executive compensation and EPS

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to dump our CEO. 9 straight losing quarters and your 2015 roadmap will be yet another IBM EPIC FAILURE !
