I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

IBM is a great place to work most of the time. Most "knowledge workers" work at home and stay busy going from one conference call to the next. You might have to work on a spreadsheet or .ppt from time to time, but marketing roles require very little real work. It can be mind-numbingly boring, but leaves plenty of time to pursue other things. Most of the real work is involves managing your way around the infrastructure of the company.

Cons

It is a totally executive centric organization, and most employees pledge their allegiance to their VP and then go to war with other groups. The capricious, megalomaniac executive, always grasping for power and control, is woven into the fabric of the culture, and exec worship is required for survival.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read Tom Watson Jr's memoir, beware the rock star exec and show some respect for the individually.

I worked at IBM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a large company with a lot of different areas of interest. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Company is so big, there is very little individual career coaching. You can easily feel like just a serial number on any given day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show a little more interest in your employees. Stop treating them like plug and play components.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The really good people you get to work with great, true leaders within the industry and really know how to run a good shop or project. Natural leaders are given a long rope, even when they are front line non-managers. There are some good and fun projects to work on if you can get attached to them but there are fewer and fewer of them in the US.

    Cons

There is a significant population of people not pulling their weight, often hiding behind the work at home smokescreen. There is no such thing as life balance if you have any pride in your work with 60 hour work weeks the norm. Cost cutting has gotten to the point of foolishness. Company has no long term goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has no clue what our customers think. Customers ask where is IBM headed? Morale is at a new low with recent layoffs. How can you be IT company if you fire all the field technical folks?
