I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

I can't think of too many - the pay is just OK for the area,

Cons

-frequent layoffs keep the workforce terrorized - utilization targets effectively negate any vacation benefits - all time off must be made up -promotions are almost impossible to come by, and if one does get promoted, then one is penalized for being "too expensive" for new projects

Advice to Management

Get rid of several layers of management so that the utilization targets are obtainable without burning out the staff. Stop the constant layoffs.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Can work from home easily Flexible working hours Awesome opportunities to learn

    Cons

No work life balance, PTO must be made up so IBM achieves 99% utilization. Required to work at least 44 hours per week and at least one Saturday quarterly. Poor management IBM does not care about its employees If you do work more than required, still more is demanded of you, also without recognition.

    Advice to Management

Treat the employee as a valuable asset instead of number. It's also hard on morale to see all of the layoffs occurring on a continual basis.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

good people, great capabilities, huge R&D investments, wonderful client base

    Cons

Ran by finance, hr and legal. Great capabilities can't be put to use due to all the internal roadblocks. While all over the world not truly global in terms of incentives, ability to work easily globally with clients

    Advice to Management

cut out a ton of middle management so that sr management decisions can flow down. push down empowerment. Run like a business not like a spreadsheet. Allow managers to make business decisions vs finance. Put clients ahead of IBM and IBM will come out ahead.
