Pros

IBM is, without a doubt a great company and a good employer. The company is huge, it's decision-making slow super slow and the business is run by the spreadsheet masters. Nonetheless, job opportunities are there for the right people who don't mind mind-numbing bureaucracy.

Cons

For people with Silicon Valley DNA - for people who are accustomed to getting things done - its not a good fit. Decsions are made in a vacuum at HQ in New York. They don't get agile, they aspire to be cloud, but severely lack the DNA and relevant infrastructure to make it happen. IBM's CRM system is a custom version of Siebel. What can I say.

Advice to Management

No question, it will be difficult to change course and accelerate at the same time. It's a big big ship. My advice: when acquiring west coast cloud companies, leave them alone to retain top talent and IP. Better yet, establish west coast HQ (Connecticut is where great ideas die a slow death), led by experienced startup execs so that agile teams and entrepreneurial people feel compelled to join and stay.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

As long as you can stand sitting on conference calls all day and you keep your head down, you can do very little work and have a side business. For now it is still a good brand to have on your resume.

    Cons

Performance is in no way connected to pay. It is impossible to advance or be promoted to a higher band. New roles are always lateral and there is never any more money with additional responsibilities. Too much focus on process over progress. They have acquired some great technology over the last 10 years but seem intent on extracting revenue without continued investment for innovation. Soul crushing office environment-- everyone is unhappy and disaffected. Focus on $20 EPS is destroying the company.

    Advice to Management

Look outside IBM for senior leaders. You have become much too insular. You need fresh outside ideas.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Although it's not a relevant technology company anymore, IBM still offers many opportunities to work across industries and functions.

    Cons

Entrenched management class; elitist and self-serving. Plus, they are extremely cheap with salary, bonus and travel expenses. My advice to new employees is to get some experience and contacts and quickly move on to another company that appreciates talent.

    Advice to Management

Executive team's inability to grow revenue is the No. 1 problem. Stop blaming and firing what's left of your blue-collar work force. The majority of the board and the executive team there should get the boot for their total failure to meaningfully grow the company over the past decade.
