Great company, but very large where you feel more like a number...

Pros

Great company and the know their businesses. They have great intellectual property and a lot of solid employees. You definitely have a lot of competent peers to work with and depend on. They have great strategies and a culture of being number one in the services they provide.

Cons

It is such a large organization, you feel like a number and not that important. Everything is done and reviewed with very formal systems. Lots of data for data sake. You have to fill out a lot of forms all the time to document everything.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to make each of the business units feel more independent. Where the people feel that they are having an influence on the company and its performace.

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

    - work / life balance
    - 401(k) match is awesome
    - flexible work hours
    - vacation time is great
    - they don't work you to death (at least in my dept.)
    - free light rail pass for commuting
    - encourage learning, having a mentor, moving around in the company

    Cons

    - the ability to affect change is difficult because the company is so large
    - career growth is a slow process

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - listen to your designers when designing software products, not developers
    - focus on the user experience to retain customers and attract new ones
    - avoid pushing feature overload vs. designing a solid experience that customers want
    - in companies other than IBM, designers LEAD developoment - not the other way around. It's backwards at IBM (a VERY old mentality in product design)

    Pros

They have a relaxed culture. There is not alot of micro management. You are given the opportunity to do your job.

    Cons

There is no room for advancement. So called layoffs happen at the drop of a hat with no notice. Training is poor at best for new work assignments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the people who do the work. Stop outsourcing everything trying to save a penny while treating US employees like they don't matter.
