Not a good place for advancement as a professional, no career or monetary advancement. Decent place to learn and move on

I worked at IBM

Pros

1. Name recognition of Company good for resume
2. Worked with some knowledgable poeple and had some autonomy of work.
3. Benefits were decent
4. Ethical environment
5. Committment to customer to deliver

Cons

1. Raise and bonus plan changed radically in 2000. 40% of workforce get no raise and tiny bonuses making for terrible morale.
2. Arbitrary promotions and oppurtunties handed out to favorites.
3. People running my department were not as qualified or educated as many of the staff and while they rewarded themeselves and favorites with bonuses, stock and raises would give nothing to the staff and feel no remorse.
4. Morale was bad and turnover was high. Frequently it appeared that staff people with the most years were targeted for layoffs while upper ossified management was entrenched and kept looting the salary an dbonus pool for themselves.
5. Work life balance was meted out to favorites and there was infighting over resources and raises for staff among managment.
6. Due to high level of non-diversity in management ranks lower elevel management positions were difficult for white males to achieve or retain.
7. In practice people who threaten to quit are the ones that receive promotions and raises, management by fear and greed.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Broader participation in bonus pool and stock compensation for staff. Cut the salaries and stock comp of highest paid and pay more to rank and file workers. Bonus program was inexplicabel after the changes in 2000. Everythign was discretionary so there was no tie to particiaption in bonus with perforamnce or ratings. PBC process was a highly manipulated unfair. Roundly hated by most of staff. it needs to be changed and simplified. Unless the company does more to broaden the participation in bonus and raise pool the retention of professionals is impossible.

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

    - Great Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, ect.)

    Cons

    - Wage increases haven't met the increases in cost of living for years.
    - Outsourcing to BRIC countries continues to cause IBM US employees to lose jobs and as a result those who remain are forced to pick up more duties to make up for the losses.
    - Although IBM touts itself as 'work/life balance' friendly the hours employees are required to work are not friendly to that balance.
    - Cost control has reached the point that the company is spending more money auditing costs than the actual costs involved.
    - Business and Audit control requirements are becoming so overwhelming that it's become impossible to keep up with the reports and systems to track these items.
    - Senior Management is out of touch on the affects of Outsourcing and cost cutting to the employees and as a result to the customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at the true costs of outsourcing. The loss of knowledge of your customers systems, the loss of the ability to communicate with your customers, and the affect you're having on the US economy (and as a result the customers you support who will then turn around and demand more cost cuts.... ever hear of a vicious circle?).

Stop putting so much overhead work for audits and business control reporting.

    Cons

Relocation is hard on the family. Also havingto work from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont change the pension plan; don't take away employee offices and provided better corporate relocatin assistance. Long term employees should be valued.
