Pros

Positive beginning, Lots of support, educational opportunities, looks great on resume. You will learn a lot, and figure out how federal contracting works.

Cons

Early plateau, lots of pressure, no support from upper management, mandatory overtime. Don't stick around if you want to have a career in the DC federal sector.

Advice to Management

Stop focusing on billable hours. Employee education should be an internal focus. Stop bleeding people dry at the start of their careers, otherwise no one will stick around for more than a few years.

Work can be interesting BUT, the pay is terrible, the raises are worse, and there's no career potential.

    Pros

Some specific contract work can be interesting. It really all depends on what contracts are won and where in the contract cycle you are at. For the first couple years (the honeymoon period), the work environment is exciting and motivational. The staff (NOT THE MANAGEMENT) that work at ICF International are a diverse and wonderful bunch. The Holiday Party they put on in DC is baller. Some benefits are good. Managers tend to have lots of industry credentials.

    Cons

Starting salary is below par and not competitive. Annual raises are a joke. Only get 18 days of vacation AND sick leave. Parents watch out.
There is no sense that ICF really cares whether you stay or not. ICF International does not invest in you...the client does. Managers have an expectation for staff to occasionally work long hours and weekends in light of the low pay (there's no overtime pay). Managers have NO CLUE what it's like for the staff because none of them worked at ICF as staff. Staff come and go (i.e., turnover is high) and managers are hired from industry. The company is VERY siloed meaning group managers are very possessive of staff and don't care if you think another group's work is more interesting even if you have little billable work within your own group. The entry level title is (RESEARCH ASSISTANT) and is demeaning and not appropriate.

    Advice to Management

ICF Senior Executives need to get off their "acquisition" spaceships and focus on fostering talent on the ground floor. If you are willing to risk leveraging a small business in an acquisition, then it should be easy to take risks (by providing better pay raises and training) to staff with contract-winning potential...maybe they'll consider staying longer. Solely relying on hiring retired industry professionals to bring in contract work is not a sustainable approach particularly as the market improves and the difference in pay increases at peer companies that aren't so stingy. At the very least, implement a legitimate bonus program to encourage hard work from the staff. ($500 spot bonuses again are a joke). And please please change the entry level "Research Assistant" title.

Great place to get started, get a good grounding of energy markets and deterministic modelling.

    Pros

High degree of learning, especially for the first two years. Experience valued by industry.

    Cons

Can be buried by modelling and not develop market knowledge. No client interaction.

    Advice to Management

Allow junior staff greater freedom. Focus on merit rather than tenure for promotions for senior management.
