I worked at IDC (International Data Corporation)

Pros

The entrepreneurial environment gives motivated individuals a chance to build knowledge, skills, and (especially) contacts. The brand opens doors. Employees get great exposure to customers and customer issues.

Cons

The business model is broken. Tracker products are valued externally, but tracker employees are treated as replaceable cogs internally. The consulting and advisory services aren't all that good, and customers are pushing back. The sales force makes a lot of money, but adds little value. Management probably knows some of this stuff, but doesn't really know how to react. They do nothing to promote teamwork, offer no investment, and have no strategy for growth.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to move aside - management is a big part of the problem.

I worked at IDC (International Data Corporation)

    Pros

Very interesting and dedicated analysts. Being an industry analyst at a well know firm gives you a great deal of access and entry into the biggest technology companies at an executive level. Work is interesting and you can take your research agenda in any direction you want - as long as you can retain a sufficient customer base.

    Cons

Very poor vision and operations - horribly inefficient and pretty poor leadership. Profitability model that charges extremely high rates to customers but squeezes P&Ls dry so it feels like you are always operating on a shoestring. Most investment decisions (including approving Blackberries to individual analysts) were made by 2-3 senior executives making it extremely difficult to innovate on business models, processes, tools.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    IDC needs a shake up.

I have been working at IDC (International Data Corporation)

    Pros

IDC is a privately held company, so it's somewhat more secure than a public company. Also, the people there are genuine, kind and hard working.

    Cons

Like many other companies, IDC is outsourcing much of it's workforce to other countries, which caused many layoffs. Morale is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unlike public companies, IDC has a unique opportunity in this economic downturn to offer clients more value. Instead of outsourcing the workforce, causing a dissruption in service, IDC should be investing in infrastructure and offering better delivery systems to the clients. The current strategy seems penny wise and pound foolish.
