I have been working at IDC (International Data Corporation) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours - employees are measured by results rather than facetime or hours worked Power to influence major decisions regarding technology strategy Good place to become known within an industry Interesting travel

    Cons

Unclear career path - promotions and advancement do happen, but it's not clear how to position yourself properly Very numbers driven - although the company is private, it is run strictly based on quarterly profit numbers, which makes it difficult to propose innovations that require an initial investment. Also, the company is divided into numerous P&Ls, which makes it difficult to cooperate or deliver cross-functional projects. Management prides itself on openness, but in practice is aloof, distant, and unclear about strategy. Very poor communication about layoffs and departures - often you hear about them through the grapevine, which adds to the uncertainty over how people are rewarded and penalized.

    Advice to Management

Greater transparency and openness in decision-making would be welcome. Find a way to give P&Ls more incentive to work together. Reduce the focus on quarterly profits, and allow for multi-year business plans.

I have been working at IDC (International Data Corporation) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Your work schedule is flexible, which means that if you are up to date on your work, you may or may not need to come into the office. Working from home is also a decent option. There are many opportunities to shine, and the work can be challenging and fulfulling in and of itself.

    Cons

There is often more work than one full time employee can handle, so you end up working late, even when officially there are "early release Fridays" during the summer. It's a similar story with holidays - you get quite a few of them, and a week off between Christmas and New Year's; however, you often end up working during the holidays anyway. While you get as much as 6 weeks of PTO, many employees are constantly maxed out on their PTO accrual and unable to take time off due to the heavy work load.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more people.
