Former Employee - Product Manager, Technology in Brisbane, CA
Former Employee - Product Manager, Technology in Brisbane, CA

I worked at IGN Entertainment as a contractor (less than an year)

Pros

Below the executive level, there is little pulling of rank and easy collaboration with some really smart people.

Cons

Executives don't seem to realize that the game industry is growing explosively. The mindset is that of a media company in a mature industry with many revenue streams in decline (perhaps imposed from its parent, News Corporation) . Executives are focused on cutting costs and I watched them let one clearly-identified opportunity after the next pass them by. Fortunately, the division that I was working in has now been sold to a vibrant and innovative company!

I have been working at IGN Entertainment full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

great culture, cool work environment, irreverence encouraged, enjoyable product (games!). Despite cons, I had fun (at times).

    Cons

poor upper mgmt & communication, lack of direction, innovation encouraged but little process in place to assist, large technical debt

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

if you expect your direct reports to set direction, you're doing it wrong. Think small, think simple. Remove unnecessary clutter. Look to your upper mgmt to see who isn't pulling their weight and delivering on expectations.

    I worked at IGN Entertainment

    Pros

Open culture that is generally pretty collaborative
    Autonomy to get things done
Lots of cool personalities at the office tremendous talent on the editorial and video teams and they are passionate about games. I have to love this having worked at a technology company before.

    Cons

Core executive team is smart and dedicated but there are some people that if compared to an outside Director of VP wouldn't even be close. Make VP a true VP ...

People are leaving in droves which is a bummer and hard on morale.

While the office in SF is in the best part of the city to work in, has games and the people are great, it generally feels like there isn't much thought put into the look and feel and layout/design.. Get experts in to design the place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training for everyone. Market competitive salaries and perks. Seems very cheap on even having snacks or lunch catered, etc.
