I worked at IMVU full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Vanguards in software development process leading to happy developers and increased retention. Lots of fun employee activities like treasure hunt down Castro, happy hours, picnics. Congenial company in that it's possible to know all fellow employees, a real nice to have in Silicon Valley Great location right by the MV train station and Castro Street.

Cons

The company doesn't have a process for changing itself so it's a little too rigid. Puts more emphasis on making money than making for an amazing user experience.

Advice to Management

Educate all employees in how to offer constructive feedback. Make something awesome regardless of revenue projections and the money will follow i.e. learn from Google

Engineering and politically driven rather than by design and talent--just look at their product.

I have been working at IMVU full-time

    Pros

-Excellent individuals--a pleasure to play with -Free lunch -No pressure -Lots of time for play -Given a lot of power as an engineer -Hours so flexible it's hard to imagine how IMVU can be competitive -Free wine and beer tastings weekly -The most fun off-sites

    Cons

-Unless you're an engineer, no career development. Even as an engineer, the skills you learn here probably won't translate to another tech company since you'll be working in uncommonly used languages. The engineering leadership is also unaware of modern processes due to their lack of experience outside of IMVU so you won't be learning much there either. -Poor leadership resulting in role confusion, abnormal amounts of office politics, and disgruntled employees. -Reactionary rather than visionary product development--resulting in a lot of half-baked ideas that are considered failures. -Engineering-driven org resulting in ugly, confusing products that even employees won't tell family about.

    Advice to Management

-You need someone in leadership from the outside who believes in the product, has a vision for it that's attainable within 6 months, and has the balls to fire the blockers and empower the talent.

I have been working at IMVU full-time

    Pros

All the food and snacks you can handle, open in & out policy, titles are not as important as getting the job done

    Cons

Poor onboarding experience unless you are an engineer, constantly changing vision, very concerned about day-over-day data vs. long-term forecasting

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, all of them, not just engineers or long-tenured employees who feel they know everything
