Current Employee - Tax Law Specialist  in  Washington, DC
Current Employee - Tax Law Specialist in Washington, DC

I have been working at IRS as an intern for less than a year

Pros

When the work actually comes down, it's a wonderful place to work - especially for people with legal backgrounds who don't want to practice as conventional lawyers. The work/life balance is the best there is and the hours are always very flexible.

Cons

This flexibility comes with problems - deadlines don't seem to matter and colleagues' being in and out of the office at what seem like random times can get confusing.

    Pros

Interesting Work;flexible hours; good salary; ability to move around;great people;fitness center at most locations; training when available; supportive colleagues

    Cons

lack of leadership; micro management;inconsisent with technology;inconsistent human relations with employees; cliche driven "do more with less"; no rewards;little chance to travel;cannot reward employees for jobs well done; expect employees to carry the ball while execs watch

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

talk to the people who actually have to do the tasks you think will modernize the agency; stop cowtowing to politicans and outside entities who are clueless. Think about what you ask us to do and if there is a ROI

Current Employee - Secretary in New Carrollton, MD

I have been working at IRS full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    *Flexible Hours
    *Good Benefits
    *Leave Earned
    *Ten Holidays off per year

    Cons

*If you're in certain clerical series, you cannot move up. For example, if you are a current 318 series, forget about applying for any jobs. When they look at your application, they throw it away as soon as they see your series, and don't bother looking at your experience.
    *Too much micromanagement
    *Too many reorganizations
