Former Employee - Revenue Officer in Akron, OH
Former Employee - Revenue Officer in Akron, OH

I worked at IRS full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Stable employment with full range of benefits, belonged to union so breaks, hours, etc pre-determined. I had not worked under such an arrangement.

Cons

Some delinquent taxpayers threatening, required to work in post of duty outside residence, assigned territory even farther away than POD so lots of time in car. Job just not a good fit with my personality.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

My manager was fine, career person within IRS

Former Contractor - Data Entry Operator in Austin, TX

I worked at IRS as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Lots of overtime during April, Night Differential for 630p-230a shift, casual atmosphere, no dress code, ability to listen to music / podcasts while working all night.

    Cons

Despite having the best stats, was passed up from going from seasonal to full time. Much deference given to people having been there longer and not who was doing the best work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people full time jobs based on merit and not length of time with the company, and I would have stayed much longer.

Could be better organized but the work itself is great

Current Intern - Tax Law Specialist in Washington, DC
Current Intern - Tax Law Specialist in Washington, DC

I have been working at IRS as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

When the work actually comes down, it's a wonderful place to work - especially for people with legal backgrounds who don't want to practice as conventional lawyers. The work/life balance is the best there is and the hours are always very flexible.

    Cons

This flexibility comes with problems - deadlines don't seem to matter and colleagues' being in and out of the office at what seem like random times can get confusing.
