I worked at IXL Learning

Pros

Not bad pay. Decent product. Clean workplace although crowded.

Cons

Everyone is expected to work HARD - that's not the bad part though. There's a split between those who are hired as low level tech labourers and higher level. Everyone works hard, however depending on what you are hired for really determines where you'll be stuck due to limited upward mobility.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be very open if a position you are offering lacks upward mobility so expectations are clear in the beginning. Communicate more and often with staff instead of just with management. Keep in touch with those who work for you.

I have been working at IXL Learning full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

This is a very friendly place. When I started, people went out of their way to introduce themselves and to check in on me. People seem to be very knowledgeable about their work focus, but it's also clear that many people have active, interesting lives outside of work. I appreciate that even though it hasn't been discussed much explicitly, work-life balance seems important to people here.

    Cons

If you live in San Francisco and don't have a car, the San Mateo office location can make for a bit of a long commute. People take the BART and then a shuttle (plus a very short walk). It's not the worst problem to have, but the time can add up if you have to wait very long between modes of transportation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some trainings about how each piece of the company fits together (especially on the development side) would be helpful.

    Pros

Challenging and interesting project related to online education.
    Relaxed work environment.
    No bloated and unnecessary meetings.
Hands-off management style so you are not stressed out.

    Cons

Benefits for employees with a large family is lacking compared against other large Bay-area tech companies.
You need to prepare your own lunch or go out, which consumes a lot of work hours in a busy San Mateo downtown.
Commute benefit is lacking. i.e., no paid Caltrain pass.

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO
