I have been working at Illinois Army National Guard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

It has all the benefits of active army without the pick up and move every 2-3 years. You still have a connection with community since it is the national guard. In addition you can be called out for state emergencies which is really rewarding missions since it is the people you live with you are helping

Cons

You end up working more weekends than you would on an active duty post. You don't have easy access to commissary or medical treatment facilities

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Big Army needs to remember there are not as many training days available for the traditional Soldier to train.

I worked at Illinois Army National Guard part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good training opportunities while being surrounded by competent and experienced professionals. A great mix of knowlegeable noncommissioned officers and commissioned officers who tend to be better leaders than their active duty counterparts.

    Cons

The drive can be a pain if you're not used to Chicago traffic and are driving in from downstate.
