Student Technician

Former Employee - Student IT Technician in Normal, IL
Former Employee - Student IT Technician in Normal, IL

I worked at Illinois State part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The position gives you a lot of insight into the behind the scenes operations of the University. Flexible work schedule works around your classes and any tests/homework you need to catch up on.

Cons

Professional development is minimal in the position. The workload is more than the size of the staff can handle, so at times it feels like you're fighting just to not move further behind.

I have been working at Illinois State full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of nice people; chance to help students in their futures and help develop the next generation. Good benefits.

    Cons

Parking is very difficult on campus. And the people tend to be isolated in the sense that outsiders often have a hard time overcoming their status as outsiders. There is a definite preference to go with folks who are "local" to ISU.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more willing to hire folks outside of ISU.
