I have been working at Illinois Tool Works full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The other employees are good people. There is the possibility to move to different facilities if desired and there is a variety of experiences. There is no shortage of work.

    Cons

There is no structure and the work structure is very shallow. There is a lot of secrecy, making people generally nervous. Along with the secrecy, there is a large work load causing excessive stress. There is not enough work/life balance; the comment "half day?" has been thrown around way too often when people leave at 5pm after putting in a full day. The bad portion of "no shortage of work" leads employees to never have any down time. The pay is also very low for those that started out during the down turn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise salaries, change the culture, make people feel appreciated. Since the market is picking up, it is very important that people are appreciated, and that includes a work/life balance and better pay. Management also needs to realize that by making people happy to come to work, turnover will be lower (reducing training costs) and the company can tap into employee potential that they never knew existed before (refer to Spirit magazine's December article on corporate culture).

    Doesn't Recommend
