Engineer (Former Employee)

I worked at Imerys

ProsAs mining companies go, very progressive and professional at corporate level
Diverse work environment at corporate level - overall, is much more open to change/new ideas than most mining companies
Knowledgeable people at plant level
Opportunity for exposure to global operations
Very good IT and legal support
CEO has good handle on how to run the business and is well respected within the company

ConsFrench company = too much decentralization, in some cases
Not a people-focused company, though they would like to think so-outlook on unions and labor is very old school and few visible efforts to improve relationships - attitude comes across a bit elitist
At corporate level they seem to like and/or tolerate some extreme, type A personalities who can be very cutthroat and destructive for their own good - they do not build things to last and it shows - there is significant management turnover and the company is unstable as a result
Lack of coaching/mentoring and completely dysfunctional performance management system
Big disconnect between corporate and the operations - corporate offices are beautiful and people dress very nicely - at mines people wear jeans and oftentimes walk around covered in dust - people at plants sometimes struggle to relate
Physical conditions at some operations would never be tolerated at some US-based mining companies - even the most basic of housekeeping standards are not observed, causing environemtnal and safety concerns for the public and employees
Overly obsessed with legal concerns - lawyers wield much power at Imerys and there's a bunch of them - sometimes too much focus on what is needed to cover the company's tail rather what is ethically right for the public and employees
Lack of mining experience of some senior managers and they don't look the part - some look like they have never gotten dirty in their life
Lack of strategic planning results in constant change at corporate, which confuses and frustrates downstream operations

Advice to Senior ManagementStrike a better balance between corporate and the mines from a cultural and people perspective. Eliminate the bad apples in senior management.
