It's a mixed bag at Immersion Medical

Pros

The products are very cool and fun to work on, the big picture objective of improving medical training is one that makes it easier to come to work on Mondays. Because it's a small company, there are lots of opportunities to work on things outside your official job title. The overall compensation package is pretty good for a small company. Many of the individual contributors and middle management are smart, dedicated employees who really care about the projects and people working on them.

Cons

Senior management is new and treats the employees like commodities. As of early 2009 they are laying off lots of people, including many valuable contributors. The long term planning seems non-existent.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job training / mentoring your existing employees prior to terminating them. You have shed a lot of great talent since Clent came on board. Spend more time on long range planning and communicating those plans to the employees. Start making more decisions based on the long range goals of the company rather than quarter to quarter.

    Pros

Immersion is a company that has been around for more than 20 years and innovation has been one of the main pillars of its success. All employees are trained to have the tools and knowledge to be innovative.
There are no shortages of technical challenges that can keep you motivated and busy.
People in all sites are super nice and helpful, I have been lucky to travel to the mothership in San Jose CA, since I am in Montreal.
The new office is more bright and spacious, and its location gets you access to many different restaurants.

    Cons

Company could benefit from making more marketing about what we do internally.
Decision making is centralized and operations would benefit from a more decentralized one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is willing to take feedback from employees and act to drive changes for the better. Hope they keep doing that.

    Pros

Great people to work with, all easy to get along with, most very smart, I've learned a lot from everyone. We get to work on the latest gadgets. We experiment and develop technology that people might end up using in the future. Most of all, it has been very satisfying to see our work end up in mobile devices that hundreds of millions of people use every day.

    Cons

Some growing pains, need to stay nimble like a small company as we grow into a bigger entity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep emphasizing invention as that's the key to the company's success.
