Pros

Family-like environment
Fun, young employee base
Flexible shifts
Will work around school schedule in most cases, with some hassle from mgmt

Cons

Very little upward mobility
Very little performance feedback, unless you make some massive error
Very little CEO support/visibility/encouragement
Midline managers are completely inept at everything except policing their staff and doling out punishments
If you're a student, expect to work every second you aren't in class, including both Sat. and Sun.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire mid-line managers who know how to actually manage, and who have been trained in the best techniques to encourage high employee productivity: encouragement, building work ethic and pride, reward and punishment balance, etc.

    I have been working at Improvement Direct

    Pros

    Health insurance and it is nice to actually have a job. Good personal purchase discount, keep your nose clean and it is overall a good place to work in an area that doesn't have a lot of choices.

    Cons

    Top sales people get away with stuff that is a firing offense for others. Supervisors are so overworked they do not spend a lot of time supervising. Meetings, mandatory BS meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hire more people. Your top salespeople in terms of volume are only at the top because they oversell the customer with things they do not need and leave the mess to be cleaned up by others, the people who clean up their mess are invisible. YOU HAVE TO SERVICE WHAT YOU SELL if you want the customer to come back and tell all their friends how fantastic the company is.

    I worked at Improvement Direct

    Pros

    The atmosphere is relatively relaxed. There are some really cool people to work with there. There's also a pretty good work-life balance.

    Cons

    While there are some cool people there, there are also incompetent/shady people there. Pay was pretty crappy. Management isn't very good at, well, managing. There are a lot of people in the higher positions that clearly aren't qualified to be in those positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat everyone equally. Don't let people in higher positions get away with the stuff that would get someone in a lower position in trouble.
