Pros

The mission is connected to empowering others and the work reflects that. Building relationships with stellar people - students and coworkers - is a lasting benefit of working here. The company invests in professional development, so you can easily increase your transferable skills here. The benefit package is solid, the management style is generally hands-off and supportive. The locations are top-notch, the technology and environments are above average. The IT department is the most responsive, most personable in the working world. Recent changes have improved the connection of the lead team to the work in the trenches. Workflow is challenging, interesting and educational. The daily work is extremely satisfying in that you're making a difference in a person's life.

Cons

The typical issues for corporate work also live here. There is limited room for career growth and ongoing issues with top-down communication, often the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. The HR department needs to be staffed by more former coaches. The company recently lost a high number of high quality coaches due to inflexibility in meeting coach needs. New staffing practices have lead to high concern with seasoned coaches. There is a culture of continuous improvement, which can lead to burn out.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retain high achievers. Examine the quality of coaching compared to 3 years ago. Staff HR with former coaches. Invest in coaches as they succeed, not just until they succeed. Turn down the atmosphere of "not good enough". Tighten up communication within the lead team.

    Pros

Coaches are for the most part, genuine, caring, individuals who honestly want to do good work and believe in the mission of the company. Coaches are selected for these traits and they're good people, but the notion that they are particularly amazing, talented, or smart is wishful thinking.

Skill development potential for those interested in working with students in higher education is extremely high. This is the perfect boot camp for working with students in a college setting; you'll meet with more students in a month than most higher education professionals meet in a year.

At its best, you're helping people make their dream of an education come true; that's pretty awesome.

    Cons

The company works almost exclusively with for-profit educational institutions who view their students as little more than an income source. The long-term growth potential of these institutions seems extremely poor. They are heavily dependent on student loans as funding for students and there's almost no research showing the degrees they grant are worth the cost. This funding model is dependent on continued financial support from the government and I believe strongly that the student loan bubble is going to burst some time in the next 5 years. I believe there's a strong possibility that InsideTrack will burst with it.

Depending on the account you work for, you will routinely interact with people in extremely dire life circumstances; there is little support for the emotional toll this takes.

If you're a coach, this is just another call center job.

Coaches and managers genuinely believe they are making the world a better place. Company culture is extremely hostile to anything (facts, statistics, opinions) that suggests otherwise. I left because I've met too many individuals with "degrees" from InsideTrack clients who have nothing but massive student loan debt to show for their "education" and couldn't ignore my role in that process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Diversify your client base, listen to the people who work with students, and get out of the for-profit education market.

    Pros

I have alway felt that this company, while going through normal growing pains, has the right focus overall. Recent leadership changes are a breath of fresh air. Great people and more room to stretch your brain as you take on leadership roles.

    Cons

Sometimes the fact that many of us are mucho compassionate can lead to allowing employees who frankly don't seem to want to be here to remain for a long period of time and detract attention and development from those who are eager to grow and learn. This is not just at the coach level, but at the manager and senior leadership level as well. We are getting better, though.
