Intel Corporation – “Case study in 'great' to 'good'" ... to 'mediocre'

Jun 3, 2009

2.0

Intel Corporation Senior Process Engineer in Santa Clara, CA:   (Past Employee - 2007)

Pros

Best manufacturing systems in the world, incredible discipline, laser focus on quality

Cons

Product lineup is very narrow and architecture would fail without monopoly position.
Conformist culture, terrible cost management, very poor capacity planning.
Managers are bland and uninspiring -- the more robotic, the better your chances.

Advice to Senior Management

Take some risks and get away from x86 architecture. Manufacturing is your strength and you should adopt another architecture, like ARM. Quit being a chip design firm, because you're terrible at it. You've tried for years to figure out SoC and just can't.
Don't work with TSMC and other foundries -- BE a foundry and leverage your advanced process technology. Short-sighted moves like partnering with weaker companies makes them better and you weaker.
