I have been working at InterContinental Hotels Group

Pros

you are able to be creative in your work. Althought there are standards to follow, the idea is to be your own. Create an experience for the guests. People want to get the real experience when they travel. InterContinental main focus, is to achieve that, in an elegant and refine place, without feeling stuffy. Each hotel has it's own character/ feel. InterContinental is a world wide company, so you could literaly travel the world working for them. I can say that I've had the opportunity to travel work/leisure on to differents hotels, and every where that I go, is always a new and exciting experience. Live, eat and Sleep @ the InterContinental.

Great Place To Work; Has Some Issues; None Insurmountable

I worked at InterContinental Hotels Group

    Pros

There are some really great people to work with; there is a rich brand history of Holiday Inn and InterContinental; there is great work/life balance in most areas of the company; because the company is global, there is opportunity to meet & work with people all over the world; this is the company that practically invented the hotel business which is something to be proud of; compensation & benefits are slightly above average for the hotel business; there is a desire by some within the company to truly recapture the glory days of the company; discounts on hotels are great - when you can get them.

    Cons

Like many large companies, true change is slow. Current senior management is not forward-thinking or innovative which is a shame considering the many innovative things the company has done in the past. There is no real focus on personal development unless you happen to get an exceptional manager. The Information Technology area has some great people in it, but it is caught up in politics and egos. The same is true within the Distribution area. Ethics are borderline at times. If you're good at (and enjoy) navigating politics, you'll be fine. But if you just want to get the job done you may be frustrated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The best advice would be to take a hard look at what certain members of senior management are up to. What have they truly accomplished? Take a look at the VP and above level in particular. And while you're there, take note on how many VP's and Directors there are. And how few individual contributors you really have. You also need to take more risks and be more innovative. You should be a leader again and not a follower of the Marriotts and Starwoods of the industry. Finally, the only companies that will be truly successful are the ones that focus on customer experience. There is currently not enough focus on this across the entire organization.
